As everybody who drives an automobile has noticed, gas prices seem to be increasing each and every day. Yet Americans still consistently complain every time they see the pump. Why complain America, why? The concept behind rising gas prices happens to be simple economics. As we all know the world’s supply of oil is constantly becoming ever more scarce. As with any product in the economy, when the availability of a product is bountiful then the price stays low. When the supply of the product, which in this case happens to be oil, decreases and becomes scarcer then the price naturally rises. But simple economics isn’t the only factor at play…
People always complain that the oil companies shouldn’t raise their prices. Sayings such as, “they netted over 1 billion dollars last year, they don’t need to make more” or “they’re such greedy corporations” always seem to be blurted out by consumers. What’s wrong with wanting to get the most money for your product? Every day in our society, people like you and me do the exact same thing as the oil companies do except on a much smaller scale. Sure they get the most for their oil products as they can. If you were to sell your car and two people wanted to buy it, but customer A would only give you half of what customer B offered, who would you sell your car to? In most cases you would sell your car to whomever would give you the most money.
Sure, oil companies are constantly building their inventories of barrels of crude oil they have on hand at any certain period of time. If you ask me, that’s a brilliant strategy!! It keeps prices high, but it also keeps the demand high enough to where consumers will pay that price.
People in general are greedy. We always want more. We can never be happy with what we have. People always want better; better family, house, career, salary, car, etc. We shouldn’t get upset at the oil companies for acting human. We should be upset with them when they lie or deceive the public on various matters of importance.
Matters of importance such as Enron lying about their financials, or when oil companies lie about their inventories to the public are examples of matters that should be brought out to the public. When companies lie about such things, the bad isn’t only limited to the company or the individual but to the public in general. In the case of Enron, their lies hurt the company, the companies that Enron owned, investors, and the stock market in general. People lost their jobs and a lot of people lost money due to Enron’s lies.
So people, don’t get mad at the oil companies, especially for just having good business concepts or for purely acting human. They do what each and every one of us would do if we had the chance. So if you’re tired of rising gas prices, please stop complaining. Stop complaining and find a solution, whether it be not driving, carpooling, or finding an alternate fuel source. Oil is the lifeblood of people today, we need it and we need it now. What we need to do is to stop complaining about the problem and start solving the problem.
